Well, see, that's it! You're a fish out of water. Exactly. You're here flopping on the ground in Luceti! Out of your depth. Stranded. Gasping for, uh, water. Floppy. That's exactly the image I was trying to conjure.

[Only not really. But he's looking as well and eventually concludes:]

I don't see a hoodie.

Actually, this is pretty normal for me. Considering the afterlife I was in before this. It's ridiculously similar. Not out of water. At all. You're the fish here.

[ A pause. She's still looking while she talks. Hoodie, hoodie--

Wait, that scarf she liked. ] Well, there's an ocean here. I don't think there was one of those in the afterlife. We had a stream with beaches though, so that counts!

[ Yuri's looking for a way to get to the scarf a few feet away now. ]

I'm working on three years here. If I'm a fish, I've already sprouted legs. And wings, as it turns out.

[Sokka is going to start walking away, climbing over the tops of the clothes hangers, to get to the other side of the rack.]

You missed the class on evolution didn't you? [ She doesn't even know if he went to school. Whatever. ] Either that or you're a freaky mutant fish with legs and wings who forgot to add in a couple of lungs to go with those gills.

I've done the research, thank you very much. I'm not inclined to think it applies to my world.

[Even if he likes to rationalize things on his world scientifically, he just knows that it's not meant to be.

You're not in your world anymore.

You're right. I'm in a world where evolution probably isn't even relevant since, chances are, everything comes from somewhere else.

[magentarific]

Well, it'd be relevant if people started.. uh, breeding here but that would be way more depressing than anything else they could do to us here.

[markofthewise]

They already do that, outside of Luceti. It's a whole big... thing. It's all very dark. [Sokka kneels down as he looks at this sweater just below him. He starts to climb down, getting an idea.] Apparently most babies here end up becoming cultists.

[magentarific]

I don't know that I'd blame them, then. They're still dead wrong, but I can see why they'd want to destroy everything going on here.

[markofthewise]

I'm sure the cultists will be relieved to know that when they try to kill you.

[And then... Sokka jumps! Clear off. He's gone!]

[magentarific]

[ Yuri blinks when he jumps, leaning over the side to watch him.

Yeah she's just going to watch to see if he goes splat or if he's okay before she does anything. ]

[markofthewise]

[Sokka is dangling from a sweater. He looks up at her with a smirk.]

Well, are you coming?

[He slices some of the fabric and suddenly he starts descending again, from a quickly unraveling sweater.]

[magentarific]

[ Wow don't ruin the clothes. Anyway, Yuri just gives him a look for a moment before heading down the other side of the sweater. ]

[markofthewise]

[Of course this means she's above him this time. But to his credit, he's too busy plummeting to the ground to look up.]

[magentarific]

[ If he so much as glances up, Yuri's gonna let go and aim both of her feet at his head. She doesn't care if it's going to kill them both :'D She'll try it anyway because priorities. ]

[markofthewise]

[Well, when he DOES land on the ground, he does so and is busy checking their surroundings. So they both live another day!]

[magentarific]

[ She lands a little bit afterward, then looks at him. Big question coming, just because she was thinking about doing that. ]

So, I have a question for you! Right now, are we dead or alive? And when I say alive, I don't mean breathing, bleeding, needing to eat-- those are all things I did when I was dead too. How do we tell if we're either right now? Or neither?

[markofthewise]

[This completely catches him off guard. He turns to her, incredulous.]

For big questions, I was hoping you were moving towards something like, "Where's the door?"

[magentarific]

Well the door's not really important. This whole thing will be over soon enough no matter what happens, that Malnosso guy even gave us heads up that he was going to screw with us.

So the more important question is how to tell if we're alive or dead if we can't actually die. Or, for that matter, if we're actually us and not some kind of creepy clone version while the real us are in laboratories somewhere. [ Like in The Matrix. ]

[markofthewise]

Well you know, given that our presence here has absolutely no impact on the events of our world, we could just be copies from our own world, dropped into this one. Which means that we're essentially different people than our originals. But that kind of means that we're effectively dying when we leave.

[... he couldn't decide if he liked that explanation or not. He plodded forward, looking for the door.]

But it doesn't matter. Whether we're alive or dead, we still have things to do and protect, right? So that's good enough.

[magentarific]

It'd be the same thing whether it was true or wasn't. Memories are a huge part of what make a person who they are. [ Yuri wouldn't still exist if she didn't believe that. ] Whatever person we go back to being isn't us anymore whether we're actually in a lab somewhere or replicas or anything like that, so we as people effectively die when we go home no matter what. I think that's why everyone gets so upset when someone leaves, even if they say it just means they're going home. It's the same as one of the reasons I keep fighting against letting myself get reincarnated.

But! [ And her tone gets a little more peppy. Because she does agree with Sokka on this, dead or alive. ] You're right about it not really mattering yet anyway. It might sound like a crazy, overly-optimistic dream to you, but I want to get out of here with my memories in tact and find a way to keep the pathways open so that we can all visit each other. So eventually it will matter how we exist here, but for now you're right. We just have to protect each other and I've got something of an idea for that. I'll tell you another time, though.

[markofthewise]

Well done, Yuri. You've finally arrived. You're one of us now.

[He can't sound cheerful about it, though.]

I'm definitely not, I still need to get out of here-- I'm just going to manage to do it with my memories in tact. Nothing's really changed!
