Everyone's got problems. I don't really care if he's bad with people, I like him either way.

That sort of attitude won't help him. But I suppose that just might not be something for you to worry about, either.

I've never been in the business of helping people get better. [ That's everyone else from her world. ] I just get along with people as they are. It might not work as well here, but I'm not in a position to know how to do that.

Getting along with people is fine, too.

What's death like in your world?

[magentarific]

There is no death in my world. We're all already dead, so we can't die again. Aside from that, it's just like being alive. Except there's no disease. We can't stay dead because we'll heal from anything. We can starve ourselves and feel every bit of pain, but we won't die from it. We can get chopped into a thousand pieces and be okay the very next day. Theoretically-- no one I know's gotten chopped into that many pieces. Plenty of pieces though and completely flattened.

[ She pauses. ]

There are two things that can happen though. If we accept our lives or live like normal students, we move on. We disappear, our memories are erased, our personalities... it's like we never existed and there's nothing to prove our lives happened. At the same time, it's just achieving peace. Then these shadows showed up and I still don't know why, but they started attacking people. Physically, if you get consumed by one, you're still fine-- but everything about you becomes bland and suppressed like a video game NPC.

[ Oh? The "can't die any harder" thing is odd but here is something even more interesting. ]

What are the shadows like?

[magentarific]

Giant shadows. You can shoot at them, but they don't stop. The NPCs-- there are a lot of regular students around the school that aren't actually human. At some point, I don't know why, they started turning into huge shadows. They attack and if you get swallowed, you turn into one of those NPCs. I don't know how to get someone back from that and I might have to risk going back to that if I get back. Before I was here.. I think I got swallowed by a whole swarm of them. My memory's a little fuzzy since I'd lost consciousness there.

In other words, one of them affects you, and you cease to be a person.

They take your memories. They make you just like everyone else. A normal student, like nothing bad ever happened.

That might be what you have to go back to?

[magentarific]

Possibly! I'm willing to take that chance. I've got things to do. Being alive here doesn't change that.

Even with that, you still want to go home? Hee hee, that's a strong resolve you have.

If you've got a good enough reason, you can do anything eventually.

Not always.

Always. It might just take a lot longer than you think.

Not everyone has the liberty of existing forever.

It's easy to disappear, you know. I can't do it here since I'm technically alive. The only "existing forever" is here for me and I don't even know if it'll stand since I haven't been here long enough to see if I'll age or not. Besides, word from someone else from my world has it I don't have a lot more time left when I get back.

Then can't something take long enough to outlast you?

[magentarific]

Well I just need to finish everything here, don't I? If I go back and haven't finished something in this place, I probably can't disappear. In other words, Luceti has completely screwed me up.

In a good way or a bad way?

[magentarific]

I'll let you know when I figure that out.

At least in that case it can't be that bad.

Having another reason to keep fighting usually isn't. The Malnosso making everyone their human experiment is pretty bad, but it wouldn't be worth fighting against if I didn't have something I wanted to help with.
